Tønder – A Harbour Town Without a Harbour
If you prefer a slower pace, take a walk to Denmark's oldest market town, Tønder, which dates back to 1243. Many of the beautiful houses are from the 17th and 18th centuries and they testify to the town's significance as a former trading location. Originally, Tønder was a port town, but when the dike was built at the Wadden Sea in the 1550s, the town lost direct access to the sea. This, however, did not change the fact that the town has always been - and is still known as - one of Denmark's best trading locations.
Tønder Marsh at the Wadden Sea National Park
Take a trip to Tønder Marsh (Tøndermarken). This area, Denmark's largest meadow, is part of the Wadden Sea National Park. The marsh consists of fine clay from the sea and remnants from the ice age. There is fantastic bird life including the phenomenon called "Black Sun", which attracts thousands of visitors every spring and autumn. Be a spectator when up to 400,000 starlings dance together both in the shadow and in the sun's rays. This is a must-see.
Tønder Sport and Leisure Centre - Camping – Danhostel
Danhostel Tønder lies in green surroundings, just a 5 minute-walk from the pedestrian zone and Tønder Square. This is one of the best places to spend your holiday.
In Tønder, the nature, the culture of the Wadden Sea National Park and Centre, and the water tower with panoramic views will show off the town’s best features. The famous Wegner chairs, Prince Joachim's Chess Castle, Nolde Museum, the golden horns, the Zeppelin and Garnison Museum are all within walking distance of Danhostel Tønder.
