CHRISTIANSFELD MORAVIAN SETTLEMENT - UNESCO World Heritage Site in Denmark
Why a UNESCO Choice?
After visiting this town on a lovely summer day, you will immediately understand why it is on UNESCO's list. Christiansfeld was added in 2015. Because of unique planning and architecture, Christiansfeld testifies to the Moravian Brothers’ principles of building a community based Christian ideals and equal rights for all.
Christiansfeld was founded in 1773 as a planned settlement by immigrants from Saxony. The Danish king extended religious freedom to Christiansfeld because he was convinced that this was economically advantageous for Denmark. The male immigrants were skilled craftsmen and their town – a place which exuded peace and harmony - became in many ways a model for other areas.
What to See and Experience at Christiansfeld
Visit the square with the beautiful fountain, the Moravian Church and the cemetery with the many headstones - all the same size and all neatly arranged. Then there are the small cosy shops and beautiful tree-lined streets. There are surprises everywhere you turn. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a quaint shopping town and you almost expect to see a harbour around the next corner. It is even more amazing when you realise that this pearl is in the middle of the country, surrounded by industrial areas.
